Rough Seas, Stinging Nettles and Cider

It was my birthday this weekend and we headed down to my favorite place on Earth, Golden Cap in Dorset.

Here I can fish from the beach 2 mins walk from where my tent is pitched. Unfortunately the weather was not on my side this weekend as far as the fishing was concerned with howling winds and angry seas churning the inland waters into a muddy mess, the Mackerel fishing out  the window but bought on the exciting thought of hunting down the bass.

The lesser spotted mackerel

After some local advice and a bit of shopping at my fave fishing shop, The Angling Centre in West Bay, i bought some mackerel and a few bits and pieces and headed down the beach. The foaming seas and crazy waves over the pebble beach were too much for my rigs and I managed to lose 3 rigs in the space of twenty minutes on the moving shingle on the seas bed. Frustration finally took over as the unusually muddy high tide was pushing us further back against the cliff and we called it a day, retired to the tent and opened the scotch.

We had been told by the bar girl at the local pub that there was live music, wood fired pizza and the World Stinging Nettle Championships down the town pub which we were keen to check out. We turned up to BBC cameras and a pub that started to rapidly fill up, this was clearly a popular event. We seated ourselves outside in the sun with some Thatchers Old Rascal cider that was bloody brilliant. There were buckets and buckets of stinging nettles ready for any willing participant, as there were quite a few hours before the competition started we all sampled a nettle each and tried to decide what we thought it taste like .... like Rocket or earthy salad is probably quite close. A good few pints later the music started, there were a line up of acoustic bands to add to the chilled afternoon. Here is the website for the contest.

We topped the evening off with a trip back to the local pub on the campsite for top grub and more beer, good times!
